Mad Max
Location and Settings.
The opening scene of Mad max is set on a dusty desert covered with rocks. It was very deserted and extremely dusty, its very clear that there is no mankind. It was an abandoned dusty waste-land there was no technology. There was an old, rusty car covered with dust and paint, its almost broken and is very grubby. The car makes a lot of noise as if the car engine is faulty as the car itself looks broken and polluted, the car shows how isolated Mad Max is and the desert because there is no resources or new technology to fix things as there is no one around and the setting is a desert. Everything is abandoned at first before max is caught by the cult people and taken to a gloomy, dark, threating, unsafe cave. Everything used by the cult people and Mad max is very old technology and cars, the things they use show how backwards their society is and how they are far behind and have not developed as they are set in the dessert. The cave symbolises that its a dark deathly place. There is a lot fire and pollution created this shows danger and many risks are taken. The old-fashioned weapons and machines used making it look very cult like and tribal. The cliffs and tunnels show how they are trapped almost like there is no way out. |
Costume, hair and make-up.
When we first see Max he has messy and long hair and was wearing dusty, dirty leathered clothes. He also has a dirty beard this suggests that he has had no civilisation, with the no civilization its as if he is doing that purposely because he is protecting himself from the dangerous environment he lives close by. His face is dirty and full of dust, this suggest he has not had any resources to help him look after himself although he does look healthier than the Cult people who look malnourished. When the cult people caught poor max they gave him tattoos of his blood type this suggests people are used as objects almost animalised and he is branded like he is nothing, this objectives the personality of Max. The war boys look the same and look very inhuman, they are all covered in white paint and have black eyes, they all resemble death. The main antagonist of the movie is introduced, Immortan Joe. He looks extremely rough in shape. Immortan Joe has long white hair and looks very disgusting he also looks unhealthy however he is different to the war boys because he is the Leader, he is higher than them however they all resemble death and danger, he also look very unapproachable. He is covered in scars and has a deep robot like voice. To help him Breathe Joe wears a mask also he is assisted in most aspects in his life for example simple stuff like putting clothes on or in his case his costume similar to an armour, his struggles show he is old and close to death however he is very powerful and has many people by his side although he is very selfish and makes the people of his kingdom malnourished and desperate, however his war boys are very dedicated and were created to be loyal to immortan Joe and fight for him. All the War boys play a big role to Joe because they put their lives on the line for him and die for him. Props- The first prop shown is the car in the first scene next to Max. The car symbolises the adventures and speed max goes through on is journey to leave the Cult people and have a better life, it also represents the adrenaline of Mad Max and his adventures. The cult people use hot iron to stamp the blood bags (Max) this shows how dangerous their cult is. They use many cavemen type of tools like chains, tanks and many pulleys: these present how backwards and weird the cult people are because everything is old fashioned and we as the viewers are not familiar with their society. There is many skulls scattered around presenting death all the way through the dark tunnel cave like. The waterfall is also used as one of Joe's props that he controls. This shows he has so much power as the leader to adjust nature. The war-rig is the most significant prop because it is the one powerful thing furiosa controls to get away from Joe and protect the his precious things from him as he is a bad horrible thing, the war-rig also shows how she is in charge of the military actions. All the war boys have these steering wheels that belong to them when something big happens the steering wheel is a way for them to get away and impress Joe. The vault is also a very important prop because it is protecting the many wives from the outside and is very precious to Joe as you are likely to put precious objects in a vault to keep away from people and keep safe, therefore the many wives are used as objects and not humans. They are precious to him however as the film goes on the important objects (many wives) are taken away from Joe. |
Furiosa
Performance- She is controlled and aware of her surrounding. The Actress plays her character very well as if the character is really her she does this with very her facial expressions, they are clear and on time with the particular scene and what is happening around her surroundings. She keeps extremely calm constantly under constant pressure as her character is a fierce powerful women. The actress her self shows that women are as powerful as men maybe even more stronger. She presents girl power constantly through her character. She gets into her character very well because her character does not hold many feminine qualities and she is very strong emotionally and stereotypically men are strong emotionally. As an Actress she is very steady and is ready to mingle with dirt and grime to really emphasize her characters personality, she is control of mostly everything and performance wise she does not hesitate and stays in role completely through out the film. she is able to hold and control the weapons used, she presents a lot of power and strength its as if she really is furiosa on screen and off. She adopts the skills of Furiosa personality and becomes her fully.
Costume, Hair and make-up Furiosa has a shaved head, this represents lack of feminine in her and more powerful man-like personality however she does show her more maternal emotions in her personality later in the movie. She has a mechanical arm this also represents even with a mechanical arm she is very powerful and also she is a warrior. She wears Black clothes which shows darkness and danger which is also things Furiosa adapted throughout the movie up until her back-story in contrast to the many wives clothes, they wear white clothing wich presents how pure and innocent they are almost angelic. She has black paint like grease on her forehead showing she is a warrior who fights no matter how dirty she gets she will win no matter what and protect herself and the people she cares for. She has a dark and controlling side to her therefore the black grease shows that side of her personality. |
Actions - Furiosa is very skilful and has a lot of strength, she is controlling and overpowers people she is almost like Joe but a better person and more thoughtful and extremely clever with most aspects of her actions and life. Furiosa has taken something precious from Joe she's called betrayer and has done treason. She's a highly skilled driver and fighter she looks after people and is very protective. she has a strong fearless side but she is also caring and protective. Furious is fierce and very confident as she takes control even though she is not driving the war-rig. She is always prepare as the war rig is full of guns and knifes for protection. She seems very resilient and brave in contrast to the rest of the women in the film as she full-on attacks Max, she's also strategic. She's a skilled fighter and is on a high rank this shows she is intelligent and not so feminine because she does not have all feminine qualities she only has a few but she is in control and takes care of people although she can be a bit cold-hearted she is also has maternal qualities and is very patronising as woman because she makes then men especially Max because even though he is driving the war-rig she is still in control and knows how to use it, this makes max look a bit weak compared to her because she is very brave and extremely active she also tells Max what to do therefore she overpowers him. In comparison to the other female characters and their costumes, furiosa costume presents and shows she is strong, brave and its also quite scruff, compared to the other girls they are more vulnerable and scared. Furiosa has a backstory at first she's someone who is brave and confident however she has a backstory and she appears to be more emotinal and vulnerable when she mentions her life story. Even after everything with Max she still helps him and they hep each other against the people who are after them. She is the backbone of the whole group. When her and Max work together it shows they are equal especially in one scene where they shoot together side by side, this scene shows they are equal and help each other and have bonded through fighting off their enemies, however she still overpowers him because she is more skilful and trained than Max. Furiosa is multitasked as during the fight she thinks and comes up with useful and powerful ideas to protect the people she is with. She also has clear and good navigations as she is very creative and thoughtful. Max and Furiosa support each other this also shows they are both equal and power within. She is the hero who destroys Joe.

Many Wives and Mothers
Compared to Furiosa the many wives are fragile nervous and not skilled with guns however they are brave and they are risk-takers. They soon become a big part of the team and become resourceful. Furious takes the stereotypical mens role for example Max gives her the gun as he is not as skill-full as her therefore she uses him as a supporter and she guides him, they both help each other but Furiosa is more in charge. Furiosa is more knowlegable about fighting and war,
she's more of a warrior whereas the many wives are more innocent and they are not knowledgable about fighting. The many wives are gentle and loving. they care for everyone and are very emotional. They also care for those like the war boy who was at first very dangerous and not trust worthy. The wives and mothers are different, the Many Mothers are caring but also very powerful and strong some of them are old but they are still strong and also very skilful. They teach the wives how to use the weapons and one Mother shows one Wife her personal things, one wife is very caring and gentle also thoughtful when the Mother dies she carries her legacy for her and takes care for her things the mother left. The many wives soon adapt to the war and also fight even though they are not as skilful and are still learning but know how to protect themselves but still need to be guided and still need to be protective. The whole gang protect each other and fight for each-other. The many Mothers are very noble and wise, they are use to the war and know how to protect people. They are loving and strong powerful older women who also have a back-story, that Furiosa relates to and has some significance in it. The many Mothers have been around for a long time hence why they are old and very skilful, they also have hatred for Joe and will do anything in their will power to destroy him. The wives and Mothers present power but also for the Wives weaknesses but they are still thoughtful, however the Mothers are wiser. The many Mothers are very supportive.

The Bechdel Test.
Mad Max Fury Road passes the Bechdel test because they have more than one female and they talk about things other than stereotypical woman things for example they talk about the future. Mad Max passes the Bechdal test because there are more than 2 women in the film. There is Furiosa, then are the many wives and the many mothers, They talk to eachother about things other than men and sterotypical woman things, an example is when the keeper of seeds talks to Dag and she tells her about the seeds and plants for the future and what the greenlands were like, therefore Mad Max: Fury Road most definitely passes the Bechdel Test perfectly as there are many women and men is the last thing on ALL of their minds since they're in conflict with them throughout the movie, excluding Max. They're all very independent women are nothing like stereotypical Hollywood womenThey do, however, appreciate Max's help, which in the end Furiosa realises she does need. They compromise and talk, whether it's about how to escape Joe's grasp or about their hope of their potential good futures. Max incorporates himself into the women's plan of finding 'the greenland' and being also being safe.
The movie links to many problems of the real world - in my opinion, it's almost an interpretation of what the world could be in the future, a destroyed and dangerous ruin. For example, the aspect of nature in the film is extremely important and seen as a saviour and recentlyIt shows that humans are ruining nature and killing the world slowly for example global warming, so things like plants and greenery can be seen as a rarity in the future if we continue to treat the Earth the way we are treating it right now this moment. Another issue that reflects the real world are the war boys, who fight for their leader and belief in Valhalla, a warriors heaven and paradise. It shows similarity to terrorist groups, such as ISIS, that fight for and in the name of their god because they also believe if they fight for thier religion and their god they will go to heaven in comparison to Mad Mad the war boys believe they will go to Valhalla. There's also the fight for power currently going on in America, the Presidential Election, which is shown in the film since Joe is determined to keep his title as supreme power-holder. While the people of Citadel want water, people of America want solutions to America's overall, and that is what both running candidates of presidency and Immortan Joe offer. Not that it's a major problem anymore, but there are still elements of sexism in the real world, they link to the objectifying of the Wives in the movie. They're used as a 'breeding factory',
